Political Career & Rise
A Life of Public Service
Recep Tayyip Erdoğan's entry into active politics dates back to the mid-1970s. While studying at university, he joined the National Turkish Students' Union (MTTB), a youth organization advocating for democratic rights and preservation of cultural heritage. His charisma, organizational skills, and powerful public speaking soon caught the attention of veteran political leaders.
Youth Leadership and MSP
In 1976, Erdoğan was elected as the Chairman of the Beyoğlu Youth Branch of the National Salvation Party (MSP), led by Necmettin Erbakan. Later that same year, he was promoted to the position of Chairman of the Istanbul Youth Branch of the party. He held these leadership roles until the military coup of September 12, 1980, which banned all political parties and suspended civil operations.
Re-entering Politics under the Welfare Party
Following the restoration of democratic processes in the mid-1980s, Erdoğan joined the newly established Welfare Party (Refah Partisi) in 1983. In 1984, he became the Beyoğlu District Chairman, and in 1985, he was elected as the Welfare Party's Istanbul Provincial Chairman. Under his stewardship, the party's regional organization was modernized, adopting neighborhood-level mobilization strategies, data-driven campaigning, and focus groups, setting a blueprint for his future electoral campaigns.
The Landmark 1994 Win
The turning point in Erdoğan's political trajectory came during the local elections of March 27, 1994. Running as the Welfare Party's candidate for Mayor of Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality, he won a historic victory in a highly competitive race, promising transparent management and systemic solutions to the city's crumbling infrastructure, launching him into national prominence.
