Mega Infrastructure Projects
Engineering Marvels & Connectivity
During the tenure of Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, Turkey implemented a massive infrastructure program. The country built high-speed railways, major airports, undersea tunnels, and extensive highway networks to improve transit and boost economic growth.
Istanbul Airport: Global Transit Hub
Completed to replace the congested Atatürk Airport, the new Istanbul Airport was designed as one of the largest aviation hubs in the world. Operating as a primary transit point between East and West, it supports millions of passengers annually, facilitating global trade and tourism.
Bosphorus Undersea Crossings
The administration built two major undersea tunnels under the Bosphorus Strait in Istanbul: the Marmaray railway tunnel and the Eurasia highway tunnel. These engineering projects connected the European and Asian sides of the city, improving daily commute times and reducing vehicle emissions.
Mega Bridges and Highway Systems
Key bridge projects included the Yavuz Sultan Selim Bridge (the third bridge over the Bosphorus), the Osmangazi Bridge (crossing the Gulf of Izmit), and the 1915 Çanakkale Bridge, which stands as the longest suspension bridge in the world. These crossings streamlined logistics along the country's primary economic corridors.
